Working in Australia – How to Get Your RSA Online and What You Need to Know

Upon your arrival in Australia, it is essential to understand that securing a job requires knowledge of key insider tips that can facilitate your journey. The tourism industry is lucrative for working holidaymakers; however, it involves more than just submitting an application. To work in hospitality, obtaining the Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) certification is imperative, as it demonstrates your compliance with legal standards and your ability to handle challenges in a bar setting. Many establishments will not consider candidates without this certification, highlighting its importance. It is worthwhile as it opens up numerous opportunities in the vibrant hospitality sector, including pubs and restaurants eager to serve both tourists and locals. I did my RSA for Australia online and it was actually much easier than I thought it would have been. There is a time commitment, I think I spent about two days on mine.

What is an RSA?

The RSA certification is an essential requirement for individuals aspiring to work in licensed establishments serving alcohol. Basically, any pub, restaurant, bar, some cafes or bottle-o. This training covers legal responsibilities, equips you to manage difficult patrons, and helps prevent overconsumption and underage drinking. Whether completed online or in-person, this certification is valuable nationwide, but it is crucial to verify the specific state regulations to avoid serious implications. If you are traveling, I would just do the RSA Australia online. You could even get it all finished before even landing in the country!

How long does it take?

Most RSA courses online allow you to complete them at your own pace, featuring engaging videos and informative text readings with interactive opportunities. If you stay focused, you can finish in about 4 to 6 hours. Each section includes a mini quiz to test your knowledge, and a final exam that requires answering questions, watching videos, and demonstrating interactions, possibly through a recorded role play. Like I said earlier, I think I spent about two days on mine in total but that included having to re-do one of my final assessments.

When should I apply?

If you know you want to work in hospitality, apply before you arrive in Australia. Having the RSA sets you apart from the crowd and simplifies the hiring process for employers, who won’t have to wait for you to obtain it. Different states enforce varying rules, but typically, you can work for three months before needing to secure your RSA; however, you may need to actively enroll in a course.

How long is an RSA Valid for?

The validity of an RSA certificate varies depending on where you are in Australia:

  • New South Wales (NSW): Valid for 5 years, after which you need to renew it online with a refresher course.
  • Victoria: Requires a refresher course every 3 years.
  • Queensland: Do not expire but should be refreshed.
  • Western Australia: RSA certificates do not expire, but a refresher course may be necessary.
  • South Australia: Valid for 3 years, then a refresher course is needed for renewal.
  • Australian Capital Territory (ACT): Expires after 3 years.
  • Tasmania: RSA certificates do not have an expiry date, but refresher training is advised.
  • Northern Territory: Valid for 3 years.

It’s important to check the specific requirements for your state or territory to remain compliant, as regulations vary between regions. Staying informed about the latest guidelines helps avoid legal issues and fosters trust with clients and partners. Regularly updating your knowledge can also lead to better business practices and improved efficiency. For more infomation check out the RSA website here.

So how do I go about getting my RSA?

I completed my RSA while living in Queensland earlier this year. I decided to go the online route and used Clear to Work (cleartowork.com.au). On their website you will find courses tailored to every state/territory. Choose the right one for you and it will give you a price. You can often save money by bundling your courses which is ideal if you also need an RSG (Responsible Sale Gambling. If you’re not sure which one you need check the course code. It will usually look something like this: SITHFAB021.

Although the RSA will not help you with mixing drinks, it does give you a clear run down on how to work a bar. It will equip you with some of the soft skills you need and train you in de-escalation. The amount you’ll get out of your RSA varies from roll to roll and job to job. That being said make sure you listen carefully and take on board the information. It is essential to have these skills in small town locals or areas that may have some problems. Don’t let that put you of though, bartending in Australia is just as fun and rewarding as anywhere else.
